We are aware that Cacique Marcos Luidson de Araújo and 30 other indigenous Xukuru were convicted for incidents that occurred on February 7, 2003, in Villa de Cimbres, within the Xukuru land, in the municipality of Pesqueira (Pernambuco), which leaves us very concerned.

 

The Xukuru people and their leaders, like Cacique Marcos and his father Cacique Chicão Xukuru, are recognized nationally and internationally through the tireless struggle for the recuperation of their traditional territory and with respect to social organization of the indigenous peoples. Both always acted in defense of human rights and for recognition of a pluriethnic and multicultural State, the reason for which Cacique Chicão was assassinated in 1988.

 

Analysis of the process that resulted in the 31 convictions reveals irregularities, one of the most important facts being related to evidence not having been analyzed in the specific context in which it arose, that being the project to strengthen the Xukuru people.

 

In the process, evidence was neither presented nor duly weighed that it was the murder of the two indigenous youths and the attempted murder of Cacique Marcos, on the morning of that day, which generated the reaction of the Xukuru community as a whole.

 

Nearly all the prosecution witnesses are considered enemies of the project for strengthening of the Xukuru people. In addition to this, important evidence that would have led to another type of decision has not been duly analyzed.

 

Confident in the Brazilian Judiciary, we await redress and  *JUSTICE*!
