The arrest of Nequinho Truká revoked
Yesterday, 20 September, the judges of the Court of Justice in Brasília (5e Turma do Superior Tribunal the Justiça) have unanimously voted in favour of ‘ habeas-corpus’ of the Truká-leader Aurivan dos Santos, beter known as Nequinho Truká. The arrest of Nequinho has been revoked as well as the arrest of two other Truká-Indians. Judge Laurita Vaz argued that the arrest was unfounded.
According to Cimi the arrests of the leaders of the Truká were purely a political action to criminalize the Indians. In this way they try to hinder the fight for land. Also Amnesty international condemned the action and started a campaign. The Truká fight for approval of their indigenous area, called Ilha Assunção, in the state of Pernambuco, the North east of Brazil.
Nequinho was arrested on 11 July on suspicion of stealing cattle in 2003. This arrest happened just two weeks after his brother, Adenilson dos Santos, and his zoon of 17 years, had been assassinated by the military police force.
