PRESS RELEASE

Federal Public Prosecution Service in Espírito Santo takes Aracruz Celulose to court. The company will respond for the abusive and distortive propaganda, inducing prejudice against the Tupinikim and Guarani Peoples of Espirito Santo.

The Federal Public Prosecution Service in Espírito Santo sent today, 23 October, to the Federal Court a civil public action against the company Aracruz Celulose S/A, accusing the company of abusive and distortive propaganda, and inducing prejudice against the Tupinikim and Guarani indigenous peoples in the state.

The company is spreading in the municipality of Aracruz (Espirito Santo), in schools and public places, brochures about the indigenous issue, with deceptive sayings, besides spreading similar information by means of its web site.  Also, the company used the images of the communities and an indigenous leader without the necessary consent for that.

The federal attorneys understood that the publicity demonstrations of the company produce a negative impact in the population in relation to the indigenous communities, creating a propitious atmosphere for ethnical and racial quarrels.

In the action, it is demanded that the company is not allowed any more to reproduce, spread and distribute the contents of its web site and the brochure, besides paying for moral collective damage in favor of the community.
